February is Black History Month. James "Jimmy" McKissic was a world-renowned pianist who performed throughout the world, including more than two dozen events at Carnegie Hall in New York. McKissic was born in Little Rock and inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 1994.
February is Black History Month. Joycelyn Elders served as the U.S. Surgeon General in President Clinton's Administration and as Director of the Arkansas Department of Health. Elders was born in Schaal, AR and was inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 1995.
February is Black History Month. Rodney Earl Slater was the first African American director of the Federal Highway Administration and U.S. Secretary of Transportation under President Clinton. He grew up in Marianna and was inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 1997.
February is Black History Month. Lou Brock was an MLB player who changed the game by using the stolen base as an offensive weapon, and was the league's all-time stolen base leader until 1991. He was born in El Dorado and inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 2005.

February is Black History Month. Ozell Sutton was a leader in the civil rights movement and was present at Central High, the march at Selma, and with Martin Luther King Jr. when he was murdered. Sutton was born in Gould and inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 2001.
Fifth grade students at Chenal Elementary demonstrated their skills in research and written presentation this past week. Students investigated African American contributors to American culture and academia and presented their findings in this display in their hallway.

February is Black History Month. Grover Evans was the first African American to swim on the U.S. Paralympic Team in Barcelona in 1992. He set five world records & won 69 national championships. Evans was born in Jonesboro & inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 1996.
